THE RING OF ROYALTY IN CHINA

(A true story of Cathy's family)
Only a mere two-hundred years ago and many years back from there, Cathy's grandfathers were advisors and ambassadors for a king of a region in China between what is now Shanghai and Hong Kong.
They were benevolent and wise leaders of the king who cherished their knowledge and methods. It was a peaceful society at peace with their king.
These wise leaders wore rings that symbolized their power. Everyone who saw these rings bowed politely with respect for their position.
Soon, evil warmongers in other regions became greedy and began taking land by force and politics. At first, the general public was ambivalent towards the rebellious lot, thinking it was merely the politics of the day.
"Will they stop us from cooking for our husbands or shopping or socializing?" asked the old women. "Of course not. It will all pass as politicians argue for nothing and then fade away with the wind."
But, it didn't fade away.
Soon, all of the land was at war. Rebellious gangs raged in the streets and destroyed buildings and killed and robbed.
Out of the chaos emerged a group of Nazi-like leaders, wearing red armbands and calling themselves "The Red Guard". Mostly, they were university students who had been convinced of a false morality that money and possessions were evil and it needed to be taken from the rich and distributed to the poor.
The old ladies, their husbands, their cherished jewelry and furniture and homes of the peaceful life were all taken from them as they watched the rich and powerful dragged into the city square, tortured, and forced to admit their evil as landlords and rich business owners.
Many millions were slaughtered. The rest were sent to "farms" to be "re-educated".
Cathy's grandparents were killed outright. The rings were confiscated. Their houses were taken by force and the Red Guard threw them into a corner of one of their homes and placed their servants over them.
One day in the 1990s, Cathy's mother was in the Communist Party Community Services Office to request some sort of service for her apartment, when she looked down at the administrator's hand.
There is was! The ring. The king's ring of service was on the administrator's hand! Her father's ring. Her grandfather's ring.
That administrator was obviously the descendant of a Red Guard or maybe a Red Guard herself!
Yet, Cathy's mom could do nothing about it. It is expected to allow the past to rest and the present to flow as it is. The revolution is known as the Cultural Revolution of 1968.
IS AMERICA IN CULTURAL REVOLUTION? LOOK AROUND. WILL YOUR JEWELRY BE ON SOME BLACK LEADER'S HAND FIFTY YEARS FROM NOW?
